DIY Project -- Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign

I wrote an article recently titled Rat Pack- Vintage Vegas Themed Wedding or Event. In it a gave a quick overview of how to make your own "Welcome to Vegas" sign. These are the more detailed instructions. For more vegas decorations visit Las Vegas Party Themes. Hope you enjoy them!

Materials:

  • 4 golf club shipping boxes (same length) - available from most golf or sporting goods stores, they would love to get rid of them!
  • Clear Packing tape
  • 2 white 20" x 30" foam core board - available from a superstore, craft or office supply
  • Royal blue wrapping paper
  • hot glue gun and sticks
  • crafting sticks (popsicle type)
  • 1 red 20" x 30" foam core board
  • Floral wire
  • 2 - 50 light count packages of white/clear Christmas lights (battery or plug in style)
*Note - I am not giving exact dimensions because the overall size is relative to the length of the golf boxes. Play around with patterns drawn on newspaper or butcher paper before making cuts.
Step 1 -- Cut one golf box in half.
Step 2 -- Attach each half to one of the other whole golf boxes. These are the legs of the Vegas sign.
Step 3 -- Cut a 1/3rd piece off the 4th golf box (the unused one). Discard the rest.
Step 4 -- Wrap all boxes in the royal blue wrapping paper. Make sure the paper is wrapped tightly and secured well to the boxes.
Step 5 -- Lay two long pieces side by side and secure the small box between the two long boxes. Make sure all seams from wrapping paper on facing the same direction. Secure with a combination of clear packing tape, wire and hot glue. Make sure it is dry before continuing.
Step 6 -- Draw a diamond (with rounded points if possible) on your 20" x 30" piece of foam core. The diamond is flatter than a normal diamond, meaning it is wider (side to side) than it is tall (top to bottom). Cut out carefully and slowly -- a layer at a time to ensure non-ragged edges.

Step 7 -- Tape 1- 50 count light package of Christmas lights to the back of the diamond. This allows for 12 lights on 2 sides and 13 lights on 2 sides.

Step 8 -- Cut 7- 3" circles out of the 2nd piece of white foam board. Again, go slowly, layer by layer to cut down on ragged edges. Write the letters for "WELCOME", one on each circle.

Step 9 -- Starting with the "C" since it is in the middle of the top point of the diamond, attach it directly onto the diamond foam board. Working your way left of the "C", attach the "L", "E" and then "W". When you get to the "W", you will need to attach a popsicle/craft stick to the back side of the diamond with packing tape, taking care that it is sticking out to the area where the "W" will live. Then attach the "W" circle to the edge of the diamond and stick for stability.

Attach the "O", "M", and "e" in the same manner to the right of the middle "C".

Step 10 -- At this point, write what you want to say on your diamond shape below the "welcome" letters, before we put it all together.

Step 11 -- To make the 3-D star, draw and cut out one larger and one smaller 4 point star out of the red foam core board.

Step 12 -- Glue the small star on top of the larger star, turning the small star in a 45 degree angle.

Step 13 -- Turn your star over and tape the second strand of 50 count Christmas lights to the back of the star following the points and close to the edges.

Step 14 -- With wire, attach the finished star to the "U" shaped blue boxes, referring to the finished drawing for placement.

Step 15 -- Attach the diamond using a combination of hot glue and wire to the blue boxes in the position shown on the drawing.
